My father is currently taking Formula 303. He has a muscle in his back that has tetanized. After seeing a chiropractor they bought a bottle for 28 dollars. He has been taking it for the past three days and hasn't seen any benefit. My mother asked me to look up some information on this drug. I was unable to find the product listed in the Natural Medicine Comprehensive Database, [...], so I looked up each individual ingredient in this database, Facts and Comparisons, and MicroMedex. The later two are databases used by pharmacists and physicians in evaluating drug effectiveness, safety, dosing, and etc. This product has three ingredients Valeriana officinalis ~264 mg, Passiflora incarnata ~132 mg, and Magnesium ~65 mg. Magnesium is important in muscle contraction and relaxation. Lets next deal with passion flower extract. Facts and Comparison says
"Animal studies have shown that Passiflora extracts have a complex action on the central nervous system (CNS), inducing dose-dependent stimulation and depression. A report describes CNS-receptor binding sites of P. incarnata... The sedative effect of Passiflora may require both the alkaloids and flavonoids to be present... Passion flower's ability to reduce anxiety makes it useful for asthma, palpitations, and other cardiac rhythm abnormalities, high blood pressure, insomnia, neurosis, nervousness, pain, and other conditions. However, no clinical data is available to support any of these potential uses. the typical daily dose of 4 to 8 g is not supported. "
Facts and Comparison says about Valerian.
"There is evidence that valerian is effective as a sleep aid and as a mild antianxiety agent, although the effect appears to be weaker in healthy subjects than in poor sleepers... Valerian root (fresh or dried) has been used at doses of 2 to 3 g given 1 to 3 times/day for nervousness or as an antispasmodic, and at bedtime for insomnia."
In conclusion Valerian root has been used as a sleep aid but in doses higher than what is found here. Passion flower also has been shown to be used as a sleep aid, but doesn't claim to be a muscle relaxer any where. The dose is also much lower here then what has been researched. However it is a good looking flower I suggest it for your garden. Most of the positive effects had by this drug should be experienced if talking magnesium alone. If looking at the ingredients alone one would think it is a sleep aid not s muscle relaxer. However this drug is relatively safe. So if money is not a concern it can be tried, but a bottle of magnesium is much cheaper.
Also review their website [...] Their research pages lacks support. They push testimonials. These are two major red flags to watch out for.
